An Awesome Tune: Went to War by Amason
I was at work when this awesome song came on through my Songza playlist. The vocals were so haunting I decided I gotta find out who this was. Amason. No not Amazon, that’s not a typo. They’re called Amason. A Swedish band with an eclectic mix of singers and musicians from other bands that I sadly haven’t got the chance to know yet: Gustav Ejstes (Dungen), Amanda Bergman (Idiot Wind), Nils Törnqvist, Petter Winnberg (Little Majorette) and Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow).
“Went to War” is a song from their debut album Sky City released just 4 days ago today on January 27th, 2015! I don’t think I’ve ever caught a band I like right from the beginning like this. Initially it was hard to pick out the lyrics. All I know was the chorus of this song is insanely beautiful. With a title like “Went to War,” you’d expect a song that was a bit more somber or angry, or something more gut wrenching. Instead, this song was so calming with one of the most melodic chorus I’ve ever heard. This contrast got me even more curious about this band and this song.
Apparently this single has been making the rounds since 2013. Amason was created as a side project for its members who all hailed from respective popular indie-pop band in Sweden (Wikipedia Sweden). They’ve been releasing mainly singles and one EP since 2013. This year marks their debut album, and I’m glad I caught whiff of them in time. If you’re into melodic sounds, interesting lyrics to ponder about, and that nostalgia feeling music sometime invokes in you, this is the new band to check out!
Went to war for a lovable feeling
Tearing another instinct apart
Held two piece, a silver quarter, while I was speeding
Never wash yourself up ashore
Better off with the water cut off
The only living proof I got
Is just the sand that I was made of
Got tired building it up
I found the quiet place I lost, it’s just a cell upon the river
Clenched to places where the bottom line
Is scattered with a rain cloud
I still hope to fall
I’m not running, I’m not failing, nor I’m evading
Wonder where the nerves are still numb
Better off with the water cut off
The only living proof I got
Is just the sand that I was made of
Got tired of building it up
I found the quiet place I lost, it’s just a cell upon the river
Better off with the water cut off
The only living proof I got
Is just the sand that I was made of
Got tired of building it up
I found the quiet place I lost, it’s just a cell upon the river
