Perfect Situation
In 2005, Weezer released an album entitled ‘Make Believe’. Track 2 on this album, ‘Perfect Situation’, always stood out as one of the most solid tracks. I bought this CD the day it came out and listened to it a ton. Everywhere I went, this album was playing. It fit into my life at the time so perfectly. It was easy to latch on to, bust out all the vocal lines and try to forgot all the terrible things going on in my life.
It had been many years since I last listened to ‘Perfect Situation’. So many in fact that I was unaware that in 2006, new pressings of the album replaced the original version of this track with a modified one. This new version had a re-recorded chorus track to a slightly different melody (notice the oh-ohs between versions), background vocals were added to the outro and synth added to the first chorus.
I guess Rivers Cuomo, the lead vocalist, wrote the song with two variations of the chorus in mind. He had obviously choose one version which was included in the original pressings. During a live performance, the crowd sang along to the chorus, but in an unexpected way. They all sung to the version that wasn’t included on the album. After hearing that, Rivers made the following comment, “Well, if these ten thousand people think it should go this way, maybe we should go back and re-record it.”
I just found this out today, only 8 years later. And after many listens, I still prefer the original 2005 version the best. It’s just what I came to appreciate I guess. What about you?
